Get Creative @ The Waterside Felindre

gc_longroom_discussions gc_musicTake one hidden valley full of natural surprises and rich history; add an odd artist, musician or two; sprinkle with creative ideas; and bake (over a long weekend) at your own pace.

Result: fresh creativity and creative expression (and perhaps some creative muscles you didn’t know you had…)

Where: The Waterside Felindre. Site of a former Victorian reservoir in the hills north of Swansea and a working alpaca farm. Just 3 country miles north of the M4

When: Friday 7th to Sunday 9th July – see detailed programme below. Access is free, and please bring your own specialist materials. Donations for light refreshments are welcome and there will be a bar over the weekend. Also supper on Saturday accompanied by anyone who wants to perform during the evening as part of ‘sing for your supper’

The Waterside Felindre is on the site of the original Blaenant Ddu Reservoir. It is a beautiful and tranquil private valley with green paths, hidden glades and something new at every turn (including alpacas).  You’ll need countryside footwear and waterproofs if it’s raining. It isn’t a public park. As we are a working alpaca farm please leave your lovely dogs at home.

The Long Room – a large lakeside cabin with ample car parking – is the welcoming heart of The Waterside. Here you’ll find great Coaltown coffee, Welsh tea and homemade cake, comfy chairs, and opportunity to exchange inspiration with others. The Long Room has disabled access and panoramic views over the lake and valley.

During the weekend we will have a creative wall in the Long Room where you can make your mark.

Friday 7th July: Creative First Friday @ The Waterside

Continuing our practice of opening up The Waterside to those who want some space to think and talk on the first Friday of every month, we will have a range of activities that stimulate creative ideas for your work and organisation. Come anytime between 10am-4pm – suitable for adults.

Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th July: Get Creative Together @ The Waterside

The Get Creative Nature Trail spans the whole valley and stops at various creative pause points to engage in different activities. Families, groups and individuals can walk the trail – or parts of it – at your own pace during the day ending at the Long Room for refreshments and an opportunity to capture your creative inspiration. Writing, drawing, photographing, making using of found materials… the potential is endless. The guided creative exercises along the way will stretch your creative muscles as well as enabling you to see the natural world in a fresh light.

There is plenty to explore including woods, brooks and hillside. You will have access to the whole valley apart from the alpaca paddocks and farmhouse. Please note that this is a working farm and the remnants of the reservoir do present some hazards such as deep water and steep drops.

Alastair Duncan of StillWalks and other artists and musicians will be at The Waterside over the weekend. They will both share their creative perspective and engage with you in your endeavours.

SATURDAY:

Come any time between 2pm and 9pm. Suitable for all, including families, though not ideal for little children or buggies. Children under 16 will need to bring an adult with them…

As well as light refreshments in the Long Room (donations welcome) we will also be selling local craft beer, cider, wine and lemonade.

From 6.30pm we will be serving simple, hot food. For those with a performing bent there is the opportunity to ‘sing for your supper’ – whether this is acoustic song/music or telling a story or performing a poem. Very relaxed and informal so don’t be nervous – this is sharing the creative experience. If you are willing to give it a go – let us know.

SUNDAY:

Children under 16 will need to bring an adult with them… As well as light refreshments in the Long Room (donations welcome) we will also be selling local craft beer, cider, wine and lemonade.
